MANCHESTER NEWS

Twenty years ago today, Brian McClair scored the only goal of the game as United lifted the League Cup, then under its Rumbelows guise, with a close-fought win over Nottingham Forest. A year after finishing runners-up to Sheffield Wednesday, the Reds returned to Wembley to face Nigel Clough’s Forest, which included future United stars Roy Keane and Teddy Sheringham. In the end, McClair’s 14th minute strike was enough to settle the match and hand United a first-ever win in the competition. In the process, the Reds became the first losing finalist to return and win the next season. It was Alex Ferguson’s fourth piece of silverware at United following successes in the 1990 FA Cup, 1991 Cup Winners Cup and the 1991 UEFA Super Cup.
